"ELITE STREET"

The purpose of this program is to promote and support both academic concerns and social emotional development by providing a structured learning environment for scholars, in grades 3 - 5, to continue cultivating their academic skills while socializing with peers. The program is solely dedicated to assisting in the growth and development of children. Elements from the Five CASEL core competencies (self-awareness, self-management, responsible decision-making, social awareness and relationship skills) to facilitate the learning process.

MLK Elite Street Afterschool program takes a laser focus approach in supporting scholars academic performance levels based on i-Ready Math and ELA performance data. It will offer fun learning activities, through STEAM, SAAVAS Math/Science Curriculum, Culturally Responsive Mentor Text, Project Based Learning, and group discussions facilitated by qualified staff. Research has demonstrated that engaging students in the learning process increases their attention and focus, motivates them to practice higher-level critical thinking skills, and promotes meaningful learning experiences.

The MLK Elite Street Afterschool Academy adopts a student-centered approach to instruction through increasing opportunities for student engagement. Students who participate in the designated classes will see their test scores improve. Qualified educators will always be available to answer each child’s questions. These professional educators work within the established pedagogical framework of the child’s school, and help children understand their own learning process rather than give away answers. Students will participate in fun, interactive learning activities designed to promote creativity, critical thinking and problem-solving skills. These active learning components requires students to participate in class, as opposed to sitting and listening quietly. Strategies include, but are not limited to, brief question-and-answer sessions, discussion integrated into the lecture, writing assignments, hands-on activities, and experiential learning events.

Clear expectations are set, to design effective evaluation strategies, and provide helpful feedback. This balanced approach to learning is essential for continued academic excellence. The instruction is geared towards improving ELA/Math Academic Proficiencies as well as Art and Computer Coding: ELA skills (short responses, extended response, and a writing component); Math skills (fluency, sprints and basic operational skills); Art (hands on activities, critical thinking, creativity); Coding (logical thinking, problem solving, persistence, collaboration, and communication)
