Milton L. Olive Middle School was recently recognized by the New York State Education Department as one of only 24 schools statewide identified as a Bright Spot School for Attendance, out of more than 700 schools reviewed across New York State. This distinction was awarded to schools that demonstrated stronger-than-expected attendance outcomes and successfully reduced chronic absenteeism.

As part of this honor, NYSED and the American Institutes for Research met with the school’s leadership team to learn about the practices that have contributed to MLO's success so they can be shared with schools across the state.

“During these discussions, one message stood out – relationships matter,” Principal Dr. Michele Darby said. “Our success is rooted in the collective efforts of our teachers, counselors, social workers, support staff, security personnel, clerical staff, custodians, cafeteria staff, coaches, administrators, families and community partners. Together, we have created a school culture built on Respect, Integrity, and Dignity, where students feel welcomed, supported and connected. This recognition reflects the dedication of our entire school community and the strong partnerships we have with our families. We are honored that the work taking place at MLO is being recognized as a model for schools across New York State.”
