Wyandanch Seniors Alfaro and Majano-Carbajal Earn Suffolk Zone Awards

Wyandanch Memorial High School seniors Lauren Alfaro and Juan Majano-Carbajal were recently selected as this year’s winners of the Suffolk Zone Awards. Each year, the Suffolk Zone Chapter of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance presents awards to one male and one female student for each Suffolk high school. These exceptional students are chosen based on their physical education accomplishments, strong character and exceptional school leadership.
The captain of Wyandanch’s girls varsity volleyball team and a member of the school’s National Honor Society, Alfaro serves as student government president, reporter and secretary of the school newspaper, and Wyandanch’s Suffolk County Student Leadership Athletics representative. She was a recipient of the Senator Martinez Student Leadership Award.
“Physical education, to me, is more than just staying active, it’s about building discipline, resilience and confidence,” Alfaro said. “PE gives me a space to grow not only physical but mentally, while teaching me how to stay focused, support others and keep improving. It reminds me that effort matters more than perfection and that the habits I build like perseverance and self care will stay with me far beyond the court.”
Majano-Carbajal is a member of Wyandanch’s National Honor Society and Junior ROTC, and serves as student government corresponding secretary.
“Physical education didn’t just teach me how to stay active, it taught me how to push through challenges, stay disciplined and believe in my own strength, both physically and mentally, as I grew into the person I am today,” he said.
