Wyandanch Barbering Students Give Back

Students enrolled in Wyandanch Memorial High School’s Career and Technical Education barbering program gave back to the community last month, offering $5 haircuts in the school auditorium during a St. Baldrick’s fundraiser for children with cancer.
Led by teacher Kyle Harnig, the barbering program introduces students to fundamental skills and essential industry knowledge while exploring the scientific aspects of the profession. Students develop techniques in hair cutting and braiding while studying topics such as the history of barbering, anatomy and physiology, hair and skin structure, New York State safety and sanitation standards, and professional image and communication. Learning is reinforced through a combination of hands-on activities, theory-based instruction, lectures, community service opportunities and group discussions. In addition, students accumulate practical hours that count toward New York State licensing requirements, helping prepare them for future careers in the field.
