Wyandanch Memorial HS Celebrates Black history Through Music, Poetry and Performance

Wyandanch Memorial High School hosted a powerful Black History Celebration on March 5 in the school’s Warren Fuller Auditorium, bringing scholars and staff together in recognition of Black History Month to honor the legacy, culture and contributions of Black Americans.
The evening opened with a stirring rendition of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” performed by the school’s Elite Wolves vocal group, who later returned to the stage with Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World.” Students Maya Clinton, Arianna Dodson-Isabell, Caiden Long and Ayva Robison presented a “4 Women” salute to Beyonce, Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson and Queen Latifah. The program also featured a performance of “Black Out” by the Drama Club, while Noel Guerly sang a tribute to Haiti and Anika Campbell and Mitsuka Etienne delivered a moving rendition of “Rise Up.” In a special moment of unity, the school’s teachers joined together to perform the African American spiritual “Down by the Riverside.”
Additional highlights included energetic performances by the school’s drumline and dance groups, as well as poetry and spoken word presentations by Imutinyanosa Aghedo, Daphney Pierre and members of the Multicultural Club. The celebration served as a meaningful acknowledgment of a century of Black history, creativity and community.
