The budding scientists at Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School in the Wyandanch Union Free School District proudly showcased their curiosity and creativity at the school’s annual science fair on Feb. 5-6.
The school’s gymnasium was filled with hands-on experiments and innovative projects as district administrators, teachers and classmates spoke to the participants about their different projects.
Led by science fair coordinator Leona Dushnick, the event highlighted students’ enthusiasm for scientific discovery, presenting projects such as the relationship between electricity and magnets, how different foods react when placed in various liquids, which food an ant prefers and the process of transpiration in plants. Each project reflected the students’ ability to ask questions, form hypotheses and conduct experiments to find answers.
“Our annual science fair is a crucial event for our students as it encourages critical thinking, problem solving and a love for science,” said Ms. Dushnick. “The students worked so hard to put their projects on display and the level of engagement and curiosity was inspiring to see.”
Projects were judged by school staff using criteria from Brookhaven National Laboratory, ensuring that students were evaluated based on scientific reasoning, creativity and presentation.
Congratulations to all participants for their hard work and dedication.
