Wyandanch Memorial High School scholars came together on May 17 for a meaningful cause: raising awareness about lupus, a chronic autoimmune disease affecting millions worldwide. The event brought nearly all students, staff and administrators to the track where they walked for two miles wearing purple shirts, the official color for lupus awareness.
This is the fourth year Wyandanch Memorial High School held its lupus walk and for the days leading up to the walk students learned about the disease and its impact. Each day information about lupus was provided during the morning announcements and in health classes scholars were asked to write reports on the disease. Freshmen Aaliyah Greene felt compelled to do more because of daily challenges of living with lupus.
“As we were learning about lupus and I was working on my report it became apparent to me how little I knew about the disease,” said Greene. “I wanted to change that, so I decided to do more research and write more in order to educate myself so that I can better inform and support others. It was just my way of contributing to the cause beyond the annual walk.”
The annual lupus walk is one of the many events hosted by Wyandanch Memorial High School to help foster a sense of unity and purpose among scholars while raising awareness for important causes.
